From 1980 to 2023, the average driving distance on the PGA Tour went from 256.89 yards to 297.20 yards. While this increase is mostly attributable to advances in technology, technique, and strength training, a better understanding of average club distance has played a significant role as well. With its new guide, Golf Online Today is sharing the latest average club distance data with golfers in hopes of improving their games and lowering their scores.

When hitting longer shots, most golfers choose their driver, fairway wood, or hybrid clubs. Out of these three club types, the driver can usually be hit the furthest, with most golfers ranging anywhere from 150 to 300 yards, depending on their skill level. Fairway woods and hybrids typically max out at about 200 to 250 yards.

Irons offer the most range as far as distance is concerned. A 3-iron, for example, can sometimes be hit as far as fairway woods and hybrids, depending on the golfer. On the other end of the range, 9 and 8-irons are used to get more loft and spin, so their max distances are closer to wedges.

Wedges, according to Golf Online Today, are probably the most versatile clubs in a golf bag. Whether using a pitching or sand wedge, golfers generally hit them anywhere up to 150 yards. They’re also very useful around the green for close shots out of the rough.

“Knowing your club distances can drastically improve your golf game and it will make you look like a seasoned professional in front of your playing partners,” said a spokesperson for the website. “In our new guide, we’ve unraveled the intricacies of the different club types, all to help you put more power in your swing and make that ball fly farther.”
